Generation No. 1

1. Jesse1 Osburn was born 1780 in North Carolina1, and died Bet. 1862 – 1863 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, KY. He married Elizabeth LeMaster February 18, 1809 in Knox County , Kentucky, daughter of Eleazer LeMaster and Machell Tackett. She was born Abt. 1790 in Amherst County, VA, and died Aft. 1860 in probably in Kentucky.

Notes for Jesse Osburn:
Family tradition says that the parents of Jesse were William Osburn and Matilda Buchanan. This is really quite doublful and the parentage should more probably be listed as unproven. The names of William Osburn and Matilda Buchanan seem to all originate in the early depression years of the 1920′s when many descendents of Jesse Osburn bought or commisioned charts that "proved" that union and the the descendents therof. According to Josey Blakley ( An Osburn Family, 1972) the descendents then sent the "proof" to a lawyer , L.D. Buchanan of Houston Texas, to claim an inheritance left to Matilda and her descendents by an Uncle William Buchanan who died childless in Virginia more than hundred years before. But the lawyer died before any of this case could go to court or any settlement made. The author of "An Osburn Family" had no idea who the childless Uncle William was or when or where he died. She made some unsucessful attempts to discover this information. As far as I know the "charts" contained no specific documentation. Our family all have copies of a chart prepared for Marie Tackett Caudle in the 1930′s or 1940′s. That one shows that it was done by Paul T. Condra of Fayetteville Arkansas, and has the following written NOTICE on it. " Prepared from Congressional library, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky records also suplement (sic) furnished by Marie Caudle." There is no other indication of documentation on the paper. It should be noted that Sarah Margaret Osburn, (d/o William Henry,s/o Edmond, s/o of Jesse) married a Mr. Condra and Paul is likely the son or grandson of that union. So it is also likely that he was copying one of the earlier charts and updating it to include the family of Marie’s grandmother, Amanda, a sister of Sarah Margaret.

Although many likely William Osburns have been researched by many people, none have been found with a wife named Matilda, in any document that I am aware of. If this were a real union, someone, somewhere would have found the source of the information shown on those old charts. Nobody seems to have done so. But those old charts have certainly clouded the records of today’s researchers. In my opinion, William and Matilda simply did not exist and as cruel as it may seem, I believe that this information is the result of a fraud or scam perpetraded long ago this family. Genealogy frauds were common in the early part of the twentieth century, especially in America. People paid large sums for their "family tree" to be researched and a large majority of those trees showed connections to European Royal Houses. While it is fun to claim an ancestral line from Scottish royalty, this one seems to have a few too many gaps to be proven. It would also appear that the fraud in this case was the promise of an inheritance.

I am removing the parental connection of William and Matilda from Jesse and his only known sibling, Nancy. If in the future, documentation is found proving this connection I will gladly replace it. [JT, 2004]

Census data give Jesse’s date of Birth around 1780. The first record found for him is in 1797 when he witnessed the marriage of his sister Nancy to Gilbert Stephens. Kentucky colonial law allowed any male relative over age 16 to sign for an underage girl to marry. The only marriage record for Jesse himself is to Elizabeth Lemaster in 1809. It is probable that Elizabeth was his second wife, as Jesse would have been no less than 28 years old. The 1810 census shows 3 children under 10 and 1820 shows that those three were born between 1804 and 1810. Tracing the family from 1810 to 1860 Shows the following information.

1810- Knox County Kentucky, Barbourville: Jesse Osbourn – 10010 / 20100, no slaves: 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26. Neighbors are Henry Shackleford and John Forrister.

1820- Floyd County Kentucky, Prestonburg: Jesse Osburn – 210010 / 32010-2; 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 3 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45. neighbors are David Ross and Gilbert Stevens. ( Gilbert Stevens is Jesse’s brother-in-law.) Frances Lemaster is 2 house away.

1830- Floyd County Kentucky: Jesse Ausborn – 210210010… / 0030210…. 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 3 females 10-15, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 30-40. Neighbors Eleaszar Lemaster, James Lemaster, Stephen Ausburn. (Stephen is not a known son of Jesse.)

1840- I have been unable to find Jesse Sr in the 1840 Census. The listing for Jesse Osburn in Floyd county is much to young and is probably Jesse Jr.

In 1850 Jesse and Elizabeth are found in Johnson County with 90 year old Eleazar Lemaster living with them. Also in the household is a Dinah Sparks age 23, and a 1 year old Elizabeth Sparks. The last census record found for either Jesse or Elizabeth is 1860, when they are found next door to son, Andrew. The last entry on the tax rolls of Johnson county is for 1862 indicating that Jesse probably died in 1862 or 1863. [JT, 2004]

The following has been excerpted from "An Osburn Family", by Josie Blakely: p.20

While visiting and researching in Johnson and Floyd County Kentucky she visited …" a family graveyard in which a number of Osburns are buried. Not until we examinined the deeds copied in Paintsville (KY) that day did we realize that the Blanton farm once belonged to a Jesse Osburn ( probably Jesse Jr) who sold it in 1847 to William Seagraves . Then we recalled a William Seagraves tombstone prominently located in the little graveyard. Osburn graves which have tombstones are too recent to indentified as ours, but sunk-in-graves with bare rocks as markers are probably our Osburns. It was from this little graveyard that we got our best view of those lovely hillsides ablaze with fall colors – a view unmatched for beauty until a year later when we visited Boston Mountian near Fayetteville (AR) and found a remarkably similiar scene. Moreover, Hazel Valley, Ark. where many of descendents of Jesse have lived, is similiar in appearance to Flat Gap, KY. " [JT, 2004]

Marriage Notes for Jesse Osburn and Elizabeth LeMaster:
In 1810 the Census for Knox County Kentucky where Jesse and Elizabeth were married the family is listed with three children born before 1810. The 1820 and 1830 census records for Floyd County show the same thing. Two of the three were girls and later documnets show them to be Lavina and Sarah. I believe that this is a good indication that Elizabeth was Jesse’s second wife. The Osburn family chronicle compiled by Josie Blakely supports a theory because of the unique condition of living on the frontier in the early part of the 19th century, formal marriages did not always take place promptly as it could be several years between visits of the circuit rider. It was not unusual for a circiut rider to perform marrige rites for multiple couples at the same time. Many of the couples had beem living together for several years with the sanction of their families and parishes. This was usually accomplished by the publishing of bans by the clerk or the reader of the parish. The marriage records for Jesse and Elizabeth have been requested from Knox County, KY. [ JT, 2004]
Children of Jesse Osburn and Elizabeth LeMaster are:
+ 2 i. Edmund2 Osburn, born 1813 in Kentucky; died Aft. 1878 in Washington County, Arkansas.
+ 3 ii. Lavina Osburn, born January 25, 1805 in Kentucky; died April 18, 1895 in Arkansas.
+ 4 iii. Jonathon Osburn, born 1807 in Kentucky; died 1875 in Washington County, AR.
5 iv. Sarah Osburn, born Abt. 1809 in Kentucky. She married Samuel Seagraves 1825 in Floyd County, KY.

Notes for Samuel Seagraves:
I am unable to locate this family in any census. In 1830 It appears that Sarah may still be in her father’s house. [JT, 2004]

Marriage Notes for Sarah Osburn and Samuel Seagraves:
Married with Jesse’s consent, meaning that she was below the age of consent, which was probaly 16. [JT, 2004]

Generation No. 2

2. Edmund2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born 1813 in Kentucky2, and died Aft. 1878 in Washington County, Arkansas. He married (1) Susan Pennington September 30, 1831 in Lawrence County, KY3. He married (2) Perlina Blevins March 27, 1845 in Johnson Co. Ky4, daughter of William Blevins and Ava Collins. She was born 1827 in Kentucky, and died Aft. 1910 in probably Arkansas.

Notes for Edmund Osburn:
For some reason, Edmond is listed in several places, specifically in An Osburn Family as having been born in Virginia. All of his siblings are listed as having been born in Kentucky. He is not the oldest child, but by his birth date seems to be somewhat in the middle of the pack. The 1850, 1860, 1870 Censuses all list him as having been born in Virginia. Why, I have no idea. The later census records beginning with 1880 which enumerate his children’s families show "father’s place of birth" as Kentucky. I am listing him as born in Kentucky.

Land records for Edmond Osburn:
On October 16, 1835 Edmond and his brother, Jonathon, each bought 100 acres on Mud Lick Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky. [Floyd County Deed Book G-2; 79, 80.] Edmond’s was on Coak ( Coal?) Fork of Mud Lick Creek and Jonathon’s was on the right hand fork of Mud Lick.

Tax records from Floyd County show that he paid taxes on the land on Mud Lick Creek from 1837-1843. Some years the acreage was shown as 50 acres and in others it was listed as much as 150 acres.

In 1844,the land on Mud Creek was now in the newly formed Johnson County and he paid taxes on 150 acres. it was then valued at $200. Those tax records also show that he had 3 horses and 4 children, between 5 and 16 years of age. ( These children would be Nancy, Jesse, Andrew and Elizabeth.)

From 1850 to 1858 he paid taxes on up to 232 ares on Mud Lick, valued in 1857 at $532. BY 1848 his brother, Jonathon had moved to Washington County Arkansas, it is speculation that he may have sold or traded his land to to Edmond before leaving. There is a marraige record in Washington County for Jonathon in 1848.

This is a true transcription from the photocopy in the possession of Jeanne Tackett, June 15, 2004. The spelling and punctuation have not not been changed or corrected. Parenthetical words and question marks have been used to indicate that the document cannot be deciphered.

It is noted that the body of the license says EDWARD but the signatures say EDMOND. The spelling of Jesse’s names is taken from what appears to be a signature. [JT, 2004]

Notes for Perlina Blevins:
Perlina is the second wife of Edmund ( Edward). There are 4 children from Edwards’s first marriage, Jesse, Andrew and Elizabeth, and Nancy.

The 13 children for Edmond and Perlina are listed in the "tree" that was commisioned in the 1940′s by Marie Tackett Caudle, a g-granddaughter of Edmond and Perlina. I have found no other record of Daniel, George, Julia, Martha or Tid. There was at least one still born child, listed in the birth records for Johnson County KY. This child was born in 1857 and records indicate neither sex nor name. I believe that at least one name is a nickname, "Tid", and refers to another listed child. The others could be second names, additional children who died young, or members of other families. The "tree" listed Avey as Eva. She was listed on one census report with the family as a one year old. She is not on the next report. Osburn family records list her as having died young. Two of the children listed on the tree , Julia Ann and Martha are probably grandchildren, the daughters of Perlina’s step son, Jesse. [JT, 2004]

The family of Edmond and Perlina cannot be found in 1880 in either Washington or Crawford County. But Perlina is found in 1910 in the household of her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Thomas E. Dockery in the Crawford Township of Washington County. ( ED 13, p 9B, dwelling 111, family 111) She is probably buried in the Sunset Cemetery, but no tombstone has yet been located. The census record also shows 10 children born and 4 still living. [JT, 2004]

This child is not listed on any census with the family. One child was still born in 1857, name and sex unknown. This name appears to be a nickname and probably refers to another child. [JT, 2004]

3. Lavina2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born January 25, 1805 in Kentucky, and died April 18, 1895 in Arkansas. She married William Henson6 Bef. 1837 in probably Kentucky. He was born 1804 in North Carolina7, and died Aft. 18808.

Notes for Lavina Osburn:
Lavina and William are found in Washington County Arkansas in the White River Township in 1850 and 1860.
Children of Lavina Osburn and William Henson are:
30 i. Jesse3 Henson, born 1837 in Kentucky9.
31 ii. Mary Henson, born 1841 in Kentucky10.
32 iii. John Henson, born 1842 in Kentucky10.

4. Jonathon2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born 1807 in Kentucky11, and died 1875 in Washington County, AR. He married Martha Angeline Skelton March 23, 1848 in Washington Co. AR12. She was born 1829 in Arkansas13.

Notes for Jonathon Osburn:
Jonathon appears to be the first of Jesse’s children to migrate to the Ozarks in Arkansas. He married in Washington County in 1848 and is found on the 1850 census list in White River Township of Washington County.

More About Jonathon Osburn:
Burial: 1875, Sunset Cemetery, Sunset Community, Washington County, AR

Marriage Notes for Jonathon Osburn and Martha Skelton:
This is probably a second marriage for Jonathon. He is no longer in his fathers household by 1841 as shown by the tax lists for Floyd County, KY. He would have been over 30 years of age and would have been a taxable entity.
Children of Jonathon Osburn and Martha Skelton are:
33 i. Lovina T.3 Osburn, born 185014.
34 ii. Lucinda Osburn, born 185414.
35 iii. John R. Osburn, born 185614.
36 iv. Henry Osburn, born 185814.

6. Lewis2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born 1810 in Virginia. He married Phebe Lewis15 Bef. 1833. She was born 1812 in Virginia16.

Notes for Lewis Osburn:
The 1850 census shows Lewis Osburn was born in Virgina. This is questionable. Due to the birth order of his siblings and the marriage location of his parents, he was probably born in Kentucky, in either Knox or Floyd County. [JT, 2004]

Lewis and his family are found on records in Floyd, Johnson, Lawrence and Morgan County of Kentucky. I have unable to locate the family after 1860. I don’t beleve that they migrated to Arkansas with others of Jesse and Elizabeth’s children.

Notes for Phebe Lewis:
The 1850 seems to indicate that Lewis and Phebe plus their two oldest children were born in Virginia, but without knowing the instructions to the enumerator, it should not be assumed that a blank on the place of birth meant no change from the preceeding line. It could easily have meant Kentucky (or the state of the census). [JT, 2004]
Children of Lewis Osburn and Phebe Lewis are:
37 i. Rachel3 Osburn, born 183316.
38 ii. John Osburn, born 183517.
39 iii. Elizabeth Osburn, born 183718.
40 iv. Jesse Osburn, born 183918.
41 v. James Osburn, born 184118.
42 vi. Lovina Osburn, born 184418.
43 vii. Martha S. Osburn, born 184618.
44 viii. Solomon Osburn, born 184818.
45 ix. Nancy Osburn, born 184919.
46 x. Phebe A. Osburn, born January 29, 185220.
47 xi. William H. Osburn, born May 03, 1854 in Morgan County, Kentucky21; died January 22, 1855 in Morgan County Kentucky22.
48 xii. Nathan Osburn, born 185723.

7. Alsey2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born 1814 in Kentucky24, and died January 31, 1878 in Johnson County, Kentucky24. She married Mathew Sparks Aft. 1830 in probably Kentucky. He was born 1809 in North Carolina25, and died Aft. 1880.

Notes for Alsey Osburn:
This daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth was by far the hardest to identify. The most well known and used and documented source on Jesse’s family, " An Osburn Family" by Josie Blakely, was never able to identify this third female born between 1814 and 1819 listed in the 1830 census as being between 10 and 15 years old. In 1850 an unknown female named Dinah Sparks is listed with Jesse and Elizabeth in Johnson County, Kentucky. Also in that household is a one year old infant named Elizabeth Sparks (presumably). Many have speculated that Dinah was the missing daughter even though the age was off by at least 10 years, noting that the 1850 census in Johnson County had other age discrepancies particularly with women. However, that trail could not be verified and could not be followed successfully even though many tried.

Quite by accident an 1878 death record for a "Mrs." Sparks was found in Johnson County. The first name was illegible in the reord, but she was 63 years old when she died on January 31, 1878. Her parents were listed in the record as Jesse and Elizabeth Osburn. The 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Federal Census records were checked for Johnson County revealing the family of Mathew and Alsey Sparks with their extensive family. In 1880 Mathew is found in another Kentucky county living with the family of one of his youngest sons. He is listed as a widower. Birth records were subsequently found in Johnson County for the births of the three youngest children listed on the 1860 census. The parents of all three were listed as Mathew Sparks and Alsey Osbourn.

While this does not answer the question of who the Dinah Sparks is on the 1850 census, it does prove that she is not the missing daughter. There were many Sparks families in the Johnson County area. She could be a neighbor’s daughter, a servant, a visitor, or quite possibly a granddaughter. At this point I am no longer trying to identify her. [JT, 2004]

Marriage Notes for Alsey Osburn and Mathew Sparks:
I have not been able to find the marriage records for Alsey and Mathew, but Alsey is still in her parnets household in the 1830 census, The fist child listed in the 1850 Census was age 17 making him born about 1832. It is resonable to assume that the marriage date is between 1830 and 1832. [JT, 2004]
Children of Alsey Osburn and Mathew Sparks are:
49 i. Allen3 Sparks25, born 1832 in Kentucky. He married Mary Hundley March 07, 1877 in Johnson Co. Ky26.
50 ii. Jessee Sparks27, born 1833.
51 iii. Henry Sparks27, born 1835.
52 iv. Nathan Sparks27, born 1836 in Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Craft June 01, 1861 in Johnson County, KY28.
53 v. Lovina Sparks29, born 1839.
54 vi. Elizabeth Sparks29, born 1842. She married James Mc Dowell December 14, 1874 in Johnson Co. Ky30.
55 vii. Sarah Sparks31, born 1844.
56 viii. Daniel Sparks31, born 1846.
57 ix. Nancy Emiline Sparks31, born 1849.

Notes for Nancy Emiline Sparks:
There is a marriage or Nancy E. Sparks to William McKenzie in Johnson County, Kentucky, on December 25, 1873. The marriage records on line show that the bride was age 17. Due to the age dicrepancy I am not entering this marriage. Nancy Emiline would have been 23 in 1873 as verified by 3 separate censuses on which she is listed with her parents. It is possible that the age shown on the marriage records is wrong. Legal age of consent in Kentucky at this time was 16. [JT, 2004]

58 x. Andrew Sparks, born October 10, 185232.
59 xi. William L. Sparks, born May 21, 185533.
60 xii. Mary J. Sparks, born October 25, 185934.

8. Nancy2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born Abt. 1815 in Kentucky, and died 1881 in Washington County, Arkansas35. She married Wiley Blevins Bef. 1840 in Kentucky36, son of William Blevins and Ava Collins. He was born Abt. 1820 in Kentucky37, and died Bef. 1889 in probably in Arkansas38.

Notes for Nancy Osburn:
It is difficult to pin down Nancy’s actual birth date. She is one of three girls listed as inder age 10 in Jesse Osburn’s family in 1820 in Floyd County Kentucky. Various Census data list her birth from 1815 to 1827. The tombstone in Sunset Cemetery has 1827, but that is the most unlikely date. in 1850 her age is shown as 27 (1823), in 1860 it is 45 (1815) in 1880 it is 60 ( 1820). Using the two earlier censuses of 1820 and 1830 her most probable birth date is between 1815 and 1820.

Nancy, age 60, is found living with her sister Mary in the household of Allen and Elizabeth Guinn, Mary’s daughter and son-in-law, in the White River Township of Washington County Arkansas in 1880. He tombstone lists her year of death as 1881. [JT, 2004]

Notes for Wiley Blevins:
In 1850 Wiley and Nancy are living in Johnson County, Kentucky, in the same close knit community that include other Blevins and Osburns. Wiley is within 3 houses of his father, William; brother, Daniel and brother-in-law David Pennington. There is an on line index that indicates a marriage between Wiley Blevins and Nancy Rose in 1844 in Lawrence County, KY. The record index simply shows Box . An Osburn Family by Josie Blakely states that Wiley Blevins married Nancy Osburn. In 1850 they have a 10 year old Elizabeth living with them. Nancy Osburn’s mother was named Elizabeth and naming traditions would name the first daughter for her maternal grandmother. The next 2 children seem to be named for William Blevins and Jesse Osburn their paternal and maternal grandfathers. I believe the marriage in Lawrence County may be for another Wiley Blevins or is in error on the index.

Also in 1850 there is an 86 year old Sarah Blevins in the household. The copies are dim and the age could be 16 not 86. If this lady is indeed 86, then it is probably Wiley’s grandmother, Sarah Belcher Blevins. A note on the1850 Census, no one in this family has a listed place of birth, neither are there tic marks that I can see. The last listed place of birth for any person on the same page is Kentucky. The instructions to the enumerator should be checked on the use of blanks. I have filed in the "Kentucky" shown in the source documentation for this family. [JT,2004]

Wiley lived on Mud Lick Creek in Floyd and Johnson County from 1840 to 1857 when they sold the land there and moved to Washington County Arkansas. In 1860 the family is listed in White River Township of Washington County Arkansas. I have been unable to locate the family of Wiley Blevins in the 1870 Arkansas censuses. By 1880 his wife, Nancy, is found living with a neice and her family and is listed as a widow. In 1889 the family of Daniel Blevins, Wiley’s younger brother, was detailed in Goodspeeds biographies. The article listed that two Blevins siblings were deceased, one of whom was Wiley. There are many graves which are marked with field stones in the Sunset Cemetery. It is likely that his is one of them. [JT, 2004]
Children of Nancy Osburn and Wiley Blevins are:
61 i. John R.3 Blevins, born 1838 in Kentucky39.
62 ii. Elizabeth Blevins, born 1840 in Kentucky40.
63 iii. William Blevins, born 1843 in Kentucky41.
64 iv. Jesse Blevins, born 1845 in Kentucky41.

66 vi. Wiley Blevins, born 1850 in Kentucky42.
67 vii. Andrew Blevins, born 1852 in Kentucky42.
68 viii. Mary Ann Blevins, born July 27, 1856 in Kentucky42,43.
69 ix. Jane Blevins, born 1856 in Arkansas44.

9. Mary2 Osburn (Jesse1) was born Abt. 1818 in Kentucky, and died Aft. 1880. She married John Winkle Bef. 1837. He was born 1815 in Kentucky45, and died Abt. 1872 in Arkansas.

Notes for Mary Osburn:
It is difficult to pin down Mary’s date of Birth. She is one of 3 girls under 10 in Jesse’s 1820 household. In 1830 she is one of the three girls between 10 and 15. So her birthdate is probably somewhere between 1815 and 1820. In 1850 she is 28 , in 1860 she is 42, in 1870 she is 53 and in 1880 she is 62. he most probable birthdate is 1818. In 1880 she is listed as a widow living in the household of her son-in-law, Allen Guinn, in the White River Township of Washington County Arkansas. [JT, 2004]

I believe that thisis the Osburn line for family of Verla Porter who married Leroy Tackett. [JT]

Notes for John Winkle:
One record is showing that John Winkle died in 1892. The 1880 Census lists his wife Mary "Winkles" as a widow living in the household of her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Allen Guinn. Since this 1892 is a tombstone record that date is more likely 1872. [JT, 2004]

The family of John and Mary (Polly) Osburn Winkle seems to moved around a bit. They were apparently married in Kentucky and their first 4 children were born there. The next 2 children, Louisa, born 1845 and Jesse, born 1849 were born in Kentucky. In 1850 the family is living between Mary’s two brothers, Louis and Henry Osburn, in Johnson County, Kentucky. The next 2 children Edmond and Nancy were born in Kentucky, then John Henry, born 1856, and Mary Alice, born 1858 were born in Virginia. By 1860 the family had migrated to Washington County, Arkansas. Descendents state that the family was in Virginia just prior to moving to Arkansas, and a Virginia beau of one daughter traveled with the family. However she failed to marry him and married someone else. Various censuses seem to verify this movement, with the listed birth places of the children.

The family traveled by river to Little Rock, where they were met by someone with wagons to bring them to Washington County. [JT,2004]

72 iii. Julia Ann Winkle, born 1840 in Kentucky45; died 1925 in Arkansas46. She married Robert Skelton; born 1834; died 1882 in Arkansas46.

Notes for Julia Ann Winkle:
The descendents of Julia report that she brought her beau from Virginia with her when she came to Arkansas with her familu. The beau wanted to get married wbeh they arrived in Little Rock, but she put him off until the got to their final destination. When she arrived in Washington County, she found that her father, who had come earlier to find a place to live for his family had promised her to another man, who had helped hin to bring his family from Virgina. . The married the Arkansas man and her Virginia beau married another woman. [Excepted from An Osburn Family, as reported by Mida Dockery Porter in 1957. JT, 2004]

Notes for Andrew Osburn:
According to "An Osburn Family" by Josie Blakely, Andrew was murdered in the later part of the Civil war, 1864 or 1865. The last record entry for him is the 1863 tax rolls of Johnson County, when he paid taxes on land on either Mud Lick or Blaine Creek . Susan is on the tax rolls for 1865 and 1868, but reported no land. There are two theories about his death. One holds that he and James Patterson, a neighbo,r were slain while recruiting for the Confereracy. The other is that he was slain during a robbery attempt. [JT, 2004]

All information on the children in this family was taken "An Osburn Family"

Notes for Henry Osburn:
In 1850 Henry is found living next to the family of Jesse and Elizabeth Osburn. His listed age fits with the three youngest sons of Jesse shown in the 1830 census. Henry migrates to Northwest Arkansas between 1858 and 1860 , at about the same time as the other children of Jesse and Elizabeth. In 1850 only two daughters are listed with the family, but later censuses show and older son, John or Jonathon born about 1844.

Notes for Lydia Evans:
Lydia Evens is sometimes called Liddie in records. In 1930 she is listed as residing by herself in her own home. She was living between the family of her grandson Henry Tackett and her daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Phealan Tackett. She was living with her daughter Amanda at the time of her death in 1937. The following obituary notice appeard in the Northwest Arkansas Times on July 14, 1937.
"Funeral services were held at Sunset cemetaryat 2p.m. today fro Mrs. Lydia Osburn, 88, who died late Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amanda Tackett of Fayetteville. Rev. Norman Drake conducted the the services and internment was in Sunset cemetery. Mrs. Osburn is survived by eight children: Mrs. Mary Smith of Van Buren; Mrs. Margaret Condra of Fayetteville; Lige, Henry and Frank Osburn of Fayetteville; Mrs. Lula Guinn of Amarillo, Texas; and Mrs. Amanda Tackett of Fayetteville. She was a member of the Baptist church."

The notice names only 7 children surviving children and states that there are eight. The one not mentioned appears to be a son, William Walter Osburn whom records show was still alive at that time.

Printed next to Lydia’s obituary is a small article about the search for Amelia Earhart who had been missing for 12 days. [JT, 2004]

Marriage Notes for William Osburn and Lydia Evans:
The 1900 Census shows that William and Lydia Osburn( Osborn) had been married for 32 years. [JT,2004] I have been unable to locate the marriage records in either Washington or Crawford County. Some records and family history indicate that Edmond Osburn, William’s father, was a methodist minister (or possibly a lay minister, but it known that he married other Osburn couples). It is quite possible that he married William and Lydia. This is just an assumption on my part. [JT, 2004]
Children of William Osburn and Lydia Evans are:
+ 108 i. Amanda4 Osburn, born January 1876 in Arkansas; died February 26, 1949 in Joplin, MO.
109 ii. Susan Jane Osburn, born 1869 in Arkansas66; died Bef. 1937. She married Frank Elliott February 27, 1887 in Washington Co. AR67; born 185967.

Notes for Susan Jane Osburn:
I have been unable to locate anything on this child of William and Lydia’s other than a marriage in 1887 in Fayetteville. The marriage records do not list parents’ names and it could be in error. I have been unable to locate the family in either the 1900 or 1910 census reports. Susan Jane is not listed as a surviving child in her mother’s obituary in 1937 and has probably died prior to that time. [JT, 2004]

110 iii. John D. Osburn, born 187068; died Bef. 1937. He married Mary Elizabeth Hobbs October 22, 1892 in Washington Co. AR69.

Marriage Notes for Frances Osburn and Thomas Weir:
The index for the Washington County, Arknsas marriages indicate that Frances was 17 when she married. Several censuses listing her with her parents, including the 1850 in Johnson County KY, show that she was born in 1848, making her 27 when she married. " it is not good manners to ask a lady her age EVER!" The legal age for marriage in Arkansas was 14 in 1876. [JT, 2004]
Children of Frances Osburn and Thomas Weir are:
119 i. Rosa L.4 Weir, born 187672.

Marriage Notes for Mary Osburn and Thomas Dockery:
This marriage information is coming from An Osburn Family, by Josie Blakley, 1970. There is no doubt that they married in Washington County Arkansas, but the marriage is not in the information that I have checked. The date will be found and verified . [JT, 2003]

Marriage Notes for Edmond Osburn and Charity Knott:
This marriage more than likely took place in Washington County, Arknasas. I have been unable to verify with records. In 1900 the family consisting of Ed and Charity and 6 children were living in Reed Township of Washington County. [JT, 2004]
Children of Edmond Osburn and Charity Knott are:

Notes for Jeremiah M. Osburn:
This is the youngest of Edmond and Perlina’s children of whom I can find any record. [JT, 2004]

Notes for Nancy M. Dockery:
"An Osburn Family" lists Nancy Dockery as a daughter of J.J. Dockery making her a sister to Thomas who married Mary Jane and Sarah who married Walter. But the 1900 Census shows that Nancy’s parents were born in Tennessee and Sarah’s parents were born in North Carolina and Indiana. [JT, 2004]

Notes for Amanda Osburn:
Amanda’s granddaughter, Maxine Tackett Smith, states that her grandmother died on a bus returning to Fayetteville Arkansas from a trip to Wichita, Kansas. [JT,2003]
The obituary notice for Amanda Tackett is shown below.
" Mrs. Amanda Tackett, 76, died at St. Johns Hospital in Joplin at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Notes for Phealen Tackett:
The family story tells that Phaelan was born in KY and came to AR as a teenager. His name, as spelled, is coming from his daughther-in-law, Elizabeth Gauldin Tackett and probably originated with his wife, Amanda. Actually it is a guess. Here are some different spellings that I have found in various records: FILDEN- 1900 Census, AR, Washington County; FRELDEN TOCKETT – marriage license; FARLON – 1910 Census, AR, Washington Co.; FELDEN – 1920 Census, AR, Washington Co.; PHAELAN – tombstone in Sunset Cemetery. Two living grand-daughters ( in 2001) pronounce it "fay-lan". Grand-son, John Marvin, pronounced it "fay-lene". Records clerks and census takers seldom asked how a name was spelled and simply wrote what they heard. The 1900 census indicates that he could neither read nor write, but Amanda could. I believe the family spelling of the name came from her. (JT-2001)

The Tackett Family Associaton has the folowing account from another member a descendent of Cornelius Tackett, a sibling of Phaelan. " My g-g-grandfather Cornelius Tackett, had a twin brother, felding. They were 6 years old when the census was taken in April, 1870, so they were born about 1864. The story is told in our family that both boys followed a wagon train to Arkansas when they were 17-18 years old , and Felding stayed , and my grandparent Cornelius, returned to Kentucky…." [from William J.Tackett, Frankfort OH, 4-12-1990] This story is very close to the one told in the family of Phaelan. It was also believed that he had a twin, but our story is that the twin’s name was possibly George. It appears that the twin was Cornelius and the brother just a few years older was George.

This child is listed on a list of children for Phealan and Amanda made by Elizabeth Gauldin Tackett, their daughter-in-law. No other information is known. The sex is a best guess. In 1910 Amanda reported that she had 7 children with 5 now living. [JT, 2004]

147 vi. Cornealious Tackett, born Aft. 1900; died Bef. 1920 in Washington County, AR.

Notes for Cornealious Tackett:
Surviving nieces, Alice Davenport and Maxine Smith say that Cornelious died as a teen ager. There is a picture of him with another youth in a family album, he looks to be about 12-13 in the picture. He apparently died prior to 1920 as he is not in the 1920 census with the family. He is in the 1910 as age 6. I believe that he died at or prior to age 16. I can find no death record listed for him in Washington County during this time frame. [JT, 2002]

  1. I have more, updated information on Andrew Osburn. He was killed on April 13, 1864 in a battle or skirmish in Paintsville, Johnson County, Ky. Please email me if you want further info on him since I have extensively researched him. He is my gggrandfather. dkretzer@mikrotec.com

    • The previous info of Andrew’ death that I posted said he was killed in a battle in Paintsville on April 13, 1864. That came fro the book “The Civil War in The Big Sandy Valley, Second Edition” and is found to be from the Midland Methodist newspaper of 1920 out of Nashville, Tenn. A newer version of his death is now posted on a blog by Merlitta Perkins and it is titled “The Killing of James Patterson”. It states the info as him and Patterson both shot at their homes by unknowns during the last part of the Civil War. It can be found here: http://eakycivilwar.blogspot.com/2012/01/killing-of-james-patterson.html

  2. We’re up in here talkin’ ’bout Soul Train, Bandstand, Dance Fever, Midnight Special, Solid Gold! Don seemed like a pimp. Awesome! My husband’s family had been good friends with Mark Sellers who won Star Search dancing together with his sister and took to be a Solid Gold dancer and also to do many Michael Jackson videos. I’m hoping he’s busting a move around in honor of Don today.
